Seeing Red

A couple in their early stages was walking the mall. She pulled him into a Victoria's Secret store and picked up a frilly red nightie.

He scowled. "You aren't wearing that for me."

"But Babe, red is for love and romance."

"Blood and anger," he retorted.

"You said you left the service five years ago. You gotta let it go."

"You hold your buddy on the battlefield with blood gushing out of his guts and get over it."

"It's in the past..."

"It's every night in my colorful nightmares." He stormed away, leaving her there with no way home.

January 2, 2024, prompt from Charli Mills at Carrot Ranch Literary: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story using the color red. It can be a descriptor, a setting, a character, or a metaphor. How far can you get in a story by expanding “red”? Go where the prompt leads!

Yep, red can have different connotations, these two sure don’t see it the same way. The last line makes me wonder about him “finding his way home”.
It took me a while to realize that was you (lcrwpres) leaving such a generous comment at my site. Thanks!

If only or vets could find their way “home” more easily after having been in combat. It would benefit everyone.

yeah, I don’t think there’s any getting over something like that.

I agree, Norah. The veterans I hang out with can verify that. But they do learn to deal with it.

This is such a sad story. Why should anyone have to endure something that could/would leave them like this. And making it even sadder was the ending with him leaving her there.

I spend a fair amount of time with veterans. Unfortunately this may happen more than the average American knows.

That shouldn’t be the reward anyone receives for deciding to serve one’s country or follow a sense of duty or responsibility.

So true. But unfortunately it’s a reality.
