I am a retired grandmother that grew up in western New York State, left for 25 years, and am now back in the area. I happily live with my husband and two cats. I am pro-military, writing, food, family, and quilting. I am con-exercise, insulting commercials, and lack of common sense. I have met some great friends through this website.

Day 1 – Rt 66 trip

We started our day at our favorite restaurant having a great breakfast and saying “see you in a month,” to our favorite waitstaff. Thank you, Steve’s Original Diner for being our home away from home.

Just in case you don’t know about RT 66. It’s starting place is in Chicago, and Rochester, NY, is a few miles from there. So, we have to do some driving to get there. Today our destination was Cleveland, Ohio. When you are both senior citizens and you know you have a few hours in the car, you can easily revert to being a child. We wondered if on this trip we would see all 50 states license plates. What a surprise. Before leaving New York state we saw 21 different states, counting our own. Then the highlight of the day, in Pennsylvania, we saw an Alaska plate. We had expected that and Hawaii to be on the endangered list. By the time we got to Cleveland we had seen 28 different plates. This game might not last as long as we thought especially since we still have nine more states to travel through before the end of the month.

We left home at 11:18 am with an odometer reading of 60,976 miles. We paid $2.74 a gallon for gas to fill the tank. We each have a suit case and computer case, one six-pack size cooler, and an extra bag for footwear and swim wear. We used to do nine-day trips on a motorcycle and I don’t carry any make-up, plus we will be staying in Best Western’s that have a laundry room, so we feel we have adequate clothing. Oh, there are two red coats in the miniscule trunk that match the car, in case we need them. I do travel with my own pillow.

We used WAZE for driving directions instead of Google Maps, but when comparing them they seemed very similar. WAZE does warn you about police in your locale, though we didn’t see them. We had the top down for a few miles, but rain forced us to stop and put it up. Had we been on a motorcycle we would have been wet till we got to our destination. There is a lining to that cloud of aging when back and knee issues make you give up a favorite toy for another type.

You are probably wondering why we only went as far as Cleveland. That’s where our “bonus son” and his family live so the stop was a no-brainer. What’s a bonus son you ask. A child you claim as your own, but you didn’t have to raise. He’s been a part of our life for 13 years. He’s now a sportscaster for WEWS Ch. 5, Cleveland, Ohio. His wonderful wife made us dinner and their two-year-old, Theo, kept us entertained until Daddy got home from work. Then we spent a couple more hours catching up on family news. Part of that conversation was about the Emmy Jon won for Hosting and Producing the Cleveland Browns football pregame show. Little side story, a few years back a friend of Bob’s asked Jon why he thought he could make a living doing sports news on television. Jon’s answer then was, “Because I’m good at it.” Now at the age of 31 he has his first Emmy. The kid knew his calling and followed it. We are proud of him. Tomorrow I’ll tell you more about his wife.

A Birthday Poem for Jacob

Music. The universal language.

When there’s a beat, toes tap and bodies sway.

It can be fast and exciting, evoke feelings of loneliness,

Or have an air of peace and tranquility.

Animals even surround a singer with a guitar

I’ve watched it happening on a video.

Music. It’s one reason I met my husband

He wanted a dance partner

We could fill an empty floor

Just the two of us doing an old fashioned swing

Usually during the dinner hour

When the DJ played the crooner’s songs

Music. We sing along when alone in the car

And it takes us away from our today

People clean house to it

Surgeons operate to it

Children wiggle their bodies and butts

Grinning while being the center of attention

Music, the universal language

Aging backs took away our dance steps

So we enjoy listening, sitting near the band

In bars like the Spirit Room.

It brought us here, it’s why we come back

Well that and the birthday boy

Music is one of Jake’s things

He has a marvelous set of pipes

Everyone should get to hear at least once

Plus he makes a wickedly good cocktail

That might include an eyeball

And he writes poetry much better than so many others

Music, has brought us many new friends

Those who play it and those who listen

Some we’ve grown very close to and

Others are acquaintances in the crowd

Music, is alive in Rochester. It’s a big deal

And in so many locations

Sometimes we choose by the venue’s menu

Because our favorites are giging the same night

Music brings us together

By genre, talent, acoustically and otherwise

The stories that are sung

Could be yours or mine

Full of protest or gospel understanding

Patriotic even, the result is the same

It’s a way to share the reality of life

Music continues to be

Everywhere, All the time

Happy birthday, Jacob

An Eclipse Day Wedding

My son and his girl/fiance have been together for thirteen years and decided it was time to get married. He called on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, to ask if we would like to come to his home on eclipse day. Well, not really. The traffic was supposed to be crazy terrible as we live under the line of totality. Then he told me why. Well then, I guess we’ll be driving. Would you like me to make the wedding cake?

Friday, April 4. Carrot cake ingredients are collected, measured, and chopped.

Saturday, April 5, after a meeting and before dinner plans, the cake layers are in the oven.

Saturday, April 5. The cake layers are done and cooling.

Sunday, April 7, Two double layers are frosted with creme cheese frosting.

Monday, April 8. The cakes are turned into a cake at the home of the bride and groom. Silk flowers are added for beautification. When the bride’s adult nephews arrived, one said, “Six days’ notice, and we have a wedding cake.”

Everyone in the family brought the food dishes they are normally asked to bring for family birthdays. It was a potluck of favorites. The sky was totally overcast, there was no sun, there was rain. The garage was our refuge. See my husband in the background with his nose in his phone?

It’s starting to get dark. About 3:10 pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time. Geneseo, NY.

Totality of solar eclipse 3:20 pm.

And the light reappears. What an event.

A composite of the day. A gift from a stepbrother. It says it all. Thank you.

What did you do on Eclipse Day, April 8, 2024?

Who’s Strutting

I like to people-watch. It’s fun to imagine stories about the humans who cross your path. I was at the mall today and couldn’t help but notice the woman strutting down the corridor in front of me. I thought she was putting a lot of effort into that walk with no one to appreciate it. When she stopped and turned to look at a window display, I could see she was very pregnant. I almost laughed out loud, not at her, but at myself, for not being able to tell the difference between a strut and an uncomfortable waddle.

Written in response to Charli Mills April 9, 2024, prompt at Carrot Ranch Literary: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about someone (or something) strutting. What has caused the overconfidence? Is it arrogant? Foolish? Legit? How does strutting shape a story? Have fun and go where the prompt leads!

Let’s Travel on Eclipse Day – BOTS

It’s one week before the total solar eclipse that is going directly over our city in Western New York State on April 8, 2024. My phone rings about 10:00 AM and it’s my son calling. Often that timing means something is not quite right in his life, but this time he fools me. The news is he and his girlfriend of 13 years have decided to get married.

Cool! Amazing! When?

During the eclipse!

What?  In a flash; we are pulling a wedding together in six days. It’s a pot-luck and I get to make the wedding cake. Yippee!
