I am a retired grandmother that grew up in western New York State, left for 25 years, and am now back in the area. I happily live with my husband and two cats. I am pro-military, writing, food, family, and quilting. I am con-exercise, insulting commercials, and lack of common sense. I have met some great friends through this website.

#FlashFictionChallenge-The Mesh of Marriage

Charli Mills at Carrot Ranch Literary community has given the word “mesh” for this weeks flash fiction challenge. Here  is my offering using mesh as a verb. This is the link  https://carrotranch.com/2017/11/16/november-16-flash-fiction-challenge-2/.

“Melding two people in marriage is like weaving your personalities into a strong mesh. Today I know your special mesh is as fine as Lilly’s wedding veil. It is my duty to warn you, life will present trials that will stretch the spaces and even create holes. Disputes can be about anything from whether to have children, how to spend your money, or deal with  in-laws. I challenge you to never let your mesh get a hole in it. Do you accept my challenge?”

The reverend eyed the bride’s family as the beaming couple answered in unison, “We do.”

Make Your Own

I’m a home-made person and baklava falls into that category because you can adjust the amount of sugar, honey, lemon or cinnamon used. I decrease the first two ingredients and increase the last two to fit my personal taste. Plus I use a mixture of pecans and walnuts for a richer nuttier flavor. The real secret of making this treat though is how to defrost the Phyllo (or filo) sheets. Yes, I buy them! If the sheets are thawed slowly they handle much better and are easier to work with.  Continue reading “Make Your Own”

Thinking of Mom

47 years ago on this date, my mother passed away at home with my father by her side.  She had been sick so long we had started praying for what was best for her instead of asking for her to get better. I was in the upstairs bathroom and could hear my father through the open register to the kitchen below when he called the local funeral home director. It was about five in the morning. He said, “Gene, this is George, I hate to ruin your first day of deer season, but I need you to come pick up my wife.” Continue reading “Thinking of Mom”

Designed Slices

A bundt cake can be any cake baked in a Bundt pan, forming it into a distinctive ring shape.  The mold of the Bundt pan was originally inspired by the traditional European fruit cake known as Gugelhupf. It was in the 1950s and 1960s that Nordic Ware popularized the style for the mold design and trademarked the name Bundt.  Continue reading “Designed Slices”

Yum or Yuck

Guacamole is one of those things you either like or dislike. I don’t know anybody that sits on the fence when it comes to this green appetizer made from avocados. Me, I love it. When I go to lunch with my girlies they order what they want and if it comes with guacamole, they get it on the side and give it to me. Makes my day. Continue reading “Yum or Yuck”

Set An Example

The picture chosen for this day has me a little confused. Don’t get me wrong, it is an adorable picture, but I feel it better suits a day about sibling love rather than kindness. I think of kindness as doing something extra for a person or family, whether they know it or not. It’s not a favor, it’s an added touch. Continue reading “Set An Example”
