Clare, Michael’s physical therapist, nicknamed Clarice, was relentless. “Sergeant, there is absolutely no reason you can’t learn to walk on prosthetic legs other than your own stubbornness! Put them on and get out of that wheelchair.”
To her surprise, he said, “Yes, ma’am. Hand them here.”
She stared at him a few seconds. “You’ve been making excuses for weeks. What’s changed?”
Michael grinned. “My prayers have been answered. Heard from home that my high school sweetheart’s leaving her husband. Now I have a reason to want to walk out of here, the sooner the better.”
“That’s a new one.”
Written in response to Charli Mills January 21, 2021, prompt at Carrot Ranch Literary: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story that rephrases “light at the end of the tunnel.” Think of how the cliche replacement communicates a hopeful ending and aligns with your character or story. Go where the prompt leads!

Is this before Michael met Tessa?

Yes. She was married for 23 years to a guy she met in college who became an Army officer.
Michael served in the Army as well, but enlisted. He was medically discharged after losing his legs in an IED explosion in Iraq. He went home to recuperate and because he felt he could find a purpose building a music program in his family church.
Tessa moved “home” after her divorce to be near family.
I’ve been writing the serial for more than a year moving the characters about on their timeline wherever the prompt leads.

Wait, is this story a BOTS?
You have this great ability to make people smile with your flash.

Not a BOTS Goldie. It is a long running serial with lots of background on the characters.

I’ve read several, but they’d mostly felt like they’d gone in a single timeline direction dor a while.
