Deer hunting season always affected the veterans at the No Thanks. Some thought of fresh and canned venison and others dreaded they might hear the shooting.
Tyrell told about the first time his sister had harvested a young buck. “Rhodessa tended to aim with the wrong eye and shook with excitement. Result was, she broke the poor thing’s back legs with one shot, then killed it with the second. She was high up on the hill above our parked trucks, so shoved it right down to ’em. That deer had the most tender meat. Still haven’t had any better.”

Best chili I’ve had came from hunting in Pennsylvania.

Deer, oh deer. I wonder if Rhodessa still hunts. Hey! Guess what’s thawing for my dinner? Venison. We usually just freeze the meat, but my dad cans it as well, in mason jars. Is that a thing in your neck of the woods?

Yes, my sister used to can venison. That story was mine with the names changed. I still have that shotgun as it was my 16th birthday present from my father. No, I didn’t hunt deer, but harvested a few squirrles.
I wonder if one can put up dear, as I spelled it. Duh!

Amusing story, with the less-than-dead-eye markswoman!

Thanks, Chel. It was actully my story. And I did not hunt big game after that as I became a miltary wife and left the rural county I was raised in.

That’s even more impressive! I’ve not shot any game and highly doubt by ability to ever do so.

Wanting the meat, but not wanting to hear the gunshots is very understandable for these vets. Well written!
